Jack Dempsey: Another Famous Nevada Fighter |

Reno, Nevada. The Nevada Historical Society invites visitors to get at deeper look into boxing in Nevada as author Guy Clifton presents a lecture on another famous fighter, Jack Dempsey. The presentation takes a look at one of the greatest sports figures of the 20th century who spent a significant amount of time in Nevada.
This program is being held Saturday, July 17 at 1:00 pm in the Historical Society’s Reno History Gallery. It is the third in a series of lectures commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the historic Jonson-Jeffries fight and the history of boxing in Nevada.

Coin Show Raffle Tickets Now on Sale |

Carson City, Nev. — In honor of the 150th Anniversary of the Pony Express, The Nevada State Museum staff designed a unique raffle prize to celebrate this year’s coin show, held August 27-28, 2010. Raffle tickets are now on sale for the Grand Prize, a precious 20 ounce silver bar embedded with two one ounce .999 fine 150th Anniversary Pony Express medallions. Fabricated at Northwest Territorial Mint/Medallic Art and sponsored by John Etten of Heritage Collectibles, this unique, one-of-a-kind prize is valued at $1,500.
The Pony Express Silver Bar is on exhibit with the other raffle prizes in the Dema Guinn Concourse at the Nevada State Museum located at 600 N. Carson Street. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5, and can be purchased over the phone by calling 775-687-4810, ext. 237. Proceeds from the sale of the raffle tickets support education and exhibits at the Nevada State Museum. The Grand Prize drawing will take place at 3:00 pm on Saturday, August 28, 2010. Ticket holder need not be present to win.

Sue Coleman Presents Washo Basket Weaving and Culture |

Master Native American Artist, Sue Coleman presents Washo Basket Weaving and Culture: a Family Tradition at 7:00 pm, Thursday, July 22 at the Nevada State Museum. Coleman will share humorous anecdotes and stories of life on the Dresslerville Reservation, as well as the art of basket weaving for which she is so famous.
“I had this wonderful family,” Coleman said, “and we took care of each other.”
Coleman will bring examples of her award-winning baskets and some from her family, plus the raw materials and tools used in her artistic creations.

Powwow Traditions Exhibit at State Museum |

"What Continues the Dream: Contemporary Arts and Crafts in the Powwow Tradition" is on display at the Nevada State Museum through August 7, 2010. This colorful exhibit, on loan from the Nevada Arts Council’s Nevada Touring Initiative, presents art and crafts that capture the vibrant spirit of the contemporary powwow, Nevada-style.
Personal quotes from the artists reflect the deep spirituality, family values, sense of community, and honor prized by powwow artists and participants. The exhibit includes photos and stunning examples of powwow regalia, including a hand drum, rattle, beaded belt, bracelet and moccasins, dance stick and more.
