WASHOE COUNTY STUDENT, EMILY ORELLANA WINS STATE POETRY CONTEST FOR SECOND CONSECUTIVE YEAR

Carson High School’s Stephanie Kulla places second; Pershing County High School’s Erika Terry takes third

RENO, Nev. Washoe County high school student, Emily Orellana won the 5th Annual Nevada State Finals of Poetry Out Loud for the second consecutive year Saturday in Reno.  A seventeen year-old junior at Rainshadow Community Charter High School, Orellana received $1,000, an all-expense-paid trip to represent Nevada at the National Finals April 26-27 in Washington, DC and $2,000 for her school for the purchase of poetry books and/or programming. Second place went to Carson High School student, Stephanie Kulla and third place to Pershing County High School’s Erika Terry, who each won $500 in addition to $1,000 for their respective schools.

Orellana recited the poems “And Soul” by Eavan Boland, “I Felt a Funeral in My Brian” by Emily Dickinson and  “Rough Music” by Deborah Digges. 

“I’ve always held an interest in literature, and from the time I was young, I have loved to write,” said Orellana who also won last year’s state competition.  “Performing is a love of mine and my dreams for the future include continuing on with spoken word and poetry; becoming published is a goal I’m working towards.”

The Great Train Robbery of the Nevada Southern Railway

BCRR TrainBoulder City, Nevada.  The Nevada State Railroad Museum, Boulder City will host a special excursion ride, “The Great Train Robbery of the Nevada Southern Railway” on Saturday, April 3, 2010. Trains depart at 10:00 am, 11:30 am, 1:00 pm and 2:30 pm.

Members of the Reenactment Guild of America, costumed in Wild West attire, will “hold up” the trains of the Nevada Southern Railway on this special excursion. The heist will be complete with mock gunfire and general merriment.

Pony_Express_Medallion_Design_webIn honor of the 150th Anniversary Celebration of The Pony Express, the Nevada State Museum will mint a special .999 fine silver, commemorative medallion on Historic Coin Press No. 1. Governor Gibbons is invited to attend and officials of the Pony Express and Department of Cultural affair will be at the minting.  The Nevada Pony Express Association Inc. – Nevada Division and the Nevada State Museum are partnering to mint this unique and special medallion to commemorate the unique running of the Pony Express in American history from 1860-1861.
