Nevada Historical Society Premiers New Musical Series

Slim PickinsReno, Nevada.  A new, free, monthly musical program at the Nevada Historical Society debuts Saturday, July 31.  The premier performance will feature the group Slim Pickins who play and sing Bluegrass and fiddle tunes from 2:00 to 3:00 pm will be in the Society’s Reno Gallery.

This performance by Slim Pickins features Jennifer Webb, bass player, vocals and leader of the group; Ed Crandall, guitar player, and vocals; Gary Dunlap, guitar player and vocals; Linn Van Meter, fiddle player and vocals; and Sharon Dose, dobro player and vocals.

Tim Jones Receives Annual Arts Advocacy Award

Mayor Bob Cashell and Tim JonesReno, Nev. – Tim Jones, board chair of the Nevada Arts Council, received the 2010 Annual Arts Advocacy Award from the National Association of Counties’ (NACo) Arts and Culture Commission at its Arts Award Dinner this month, held during NACo’s annual conference in Reno. The award honors a leader who has significantly advanced the arts through advocacy efforts.

More than 100 arts and community leaders from Reno and county officials from around the nation attended the event, which was hosted by the Nevada Arts Council, Sierra Arts and Cathexes architects.

“Cunningham’s photography captures the surprising and unique scenery that surrounds us,” said museum attendant Jesse Davie. “The show features photographs of many diverse types of plants and animals as well as geologic and panoramic vistas.”

Arts Council Awards Grants to Support Arts Statewide

The Nevada Arts Council (NAC) approved 149 grant awards for a total of $560,837 for FY11 annual grants through the Arts Education and Grants Program. In May, NAC Grants Panels convened in public meetings to evaluate FY11 applications and recommend funding for the NAC Board to consider during its Spring Board Meeting held via conference call on June 7, 2010. Because of deep budget reductions sustained during the FY09 Legislative Session, panel-recommended funding exceeded the allotted amounts, requiring an average cut of 44.8% per category. Challenge Grants and Design Arts Grants were suspended for FY11 to accommodate budget cuts. Design Arts applicants were allowed to apply in the Project category.
