Secretary of Interior Ken Salazar Appoints Nevadan to Federal Board

Carson City, Nevada. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar has announced the appointment of Ron James, Nevada’s state historic preservation officer, to serve for four years on the National Park Service System Advisory Board. James has served since 2004 on the National Historic Landmarks Committee, which makes recommendations to the advisory board for listings of historic properties as landmarks. 

The advisory board also considers nominations for listings of National Natural Landmarks and on the historic significance of proposed national historic trails.  In addition, the board advises the Secretary of the Interior and the Director of the National Park Service on the various programs administered by the National Park Service.

Carson City, Nevada. The dedicated team at the Nevada State Railroad Museum completed a decade-long labor of love and study in railroad history with the restoration of the McKeen Motor Car, V&T No. 22. A celebration of the momentous occasion will be held May 9, 2010, coinciding with the arrival of the car in Carson City exactly 100-years-ago to the date.

When the McKeen runs again on May 9, 2010 it will be the first time the car has been in passenger service since it was decommissioned from the Virginia & Truckee Railway in 1945. The Nevada State Railroad Museum, Carson City has the only surviving, restored and operational McKeen Motor Car in the world.

2010 Coin WeekCarson City, Nevada — This week is National Coin Week, April 18-24, 2010. The Nevada State Museum and Reno Coin Club are celebrating National Coin Week with special events from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm on Saturday, April 24, 2010 at the Nevada State Museum. Regular museum admission applies.

The Nevada State Museum and the Reno Coin Club are both members of the American Numismatic Association.   The 87th annual National Coin Week, April 18-24, will celebrate coin and currency collecting with the theme, “Beautiful Places: Landmarks and Mintmarks.”

Tammy Symons PaintingOVERTON, Nev. The Lost City Museum presents an exhibition of art by painter Tammy Nielson Symons from May 1 to May 31, 2010.  Paintings in acrylic, oil and pastel depicting the western themes will be displayed.

Tammy studied at Utah State University and Weber State College. In addition, she studied under acclaimed artists Daniel E. Greene and Del Parson. A resident of the area for over 25 years, Tammy has received many awards and accolades for her portraits and paintings. A horse trainer for many years,

Ms. Symons finds the variety and splendor of the world around her a great source of inspiration. Once while driving on a country road, a Gambles quail flew in through her vehicle’s window. Thinking fast, she sketched the bird and quickly opened the door releasing it.
