Nevada Students Recognized in National Letters About Literature Contest |

Carson City, Nev. — The Nevada State Council on Libraries and Literacy identified three Nevada students as state winners of the National “Letters About Literature” contest. The 2010 state winners included Sawyer Pearson (Level I) at the Sandy S. Miller Academy in Las Vegas for Lemony Snicket’s The Bad Beginning; Ashleigh Ota (Level II) at the Carson Valley Middle School in Gardnerville for Jerry Spinelli’s Stargirl; and Danielle Geerling (Level III) of Reno for Alexandra Robbins’s The Overachievers: The Secret Life of Driven Kids. The letters of these students advanced to the national level judging at the Library of Congress.

Explore Historic Genoa and Mesquite Buildings through Documentary |

Reno, Nevada. Viewers are invited to step back in time, through the portals of several old buildings where the residents, past and present, have taken on the task of preserving building history. The program is a half-hour episode from the Department of Cultural Affairs’ Exploring Nevada series.
The Nevada Historical Society will present the video documentary “Building History in Genoa and Mesquite, on Wednesday, May 26, 2010 at 12:00 pm as part of their free High Noon video series in the Reno History gallery.
Following the video is a presentation and question and answer period hosted by Billie J. Rightmire, fourth generation Genoan and the Genoa Town Historian who also appears in the documentary.

The Living Desert - Photo Exhibit at Lost City Museum |

OVERTON, Nev. The Lost City Museum presents the photography of artists Scott Simper and William Mazzanti in the exhibition “The Living Desert.” The duo will be exhibiting samples of their work at the museum from June 3 to June 27, 2010.
The photographs featured in this show portray a great variety of subjects. Wild and imaginative rock formations, the burst of color that arrives with the blooming of spring flowers, are all captured for the viewer’s enjoyment of the show.

Railroads in the African American Experience |

CARSON CITY, Nev. – The Nevada State Railroad Museum, Carson City will host Dr. Ted Kornweibel when he presents a fast-paced program on “Railroads in the African American Experience.” Featuring many historic photographs, it takes viewers on a rich visual tour of the black railroad heritage from slavery to Amtrak, examining the significant contributions of African Americans to the building, maintenance, operation, and profitability of the American railway system. The program takes place on Monday, May 31 at 4:30 pm at the Wabuska Depot. Regular museum admission charges apply.
